Do you really know about these aspects of EPDM rubber materials?

Release time:2026-07-13

The "EPDM" rubber material used in silicone rubber products is surely familiar to everyone. This material, which is widely applied in automotive rubber parts, has permeated into all aspects of our lives. So, do you really know about this material?

EPDM

EPDM Chinese name: Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Rubber (abbreviated as EPDM), Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Rubber is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and non-conjugated dienes. It began commercial production in 1963. The annual global consumption is 800,000 tons. The main characteristic of EPDM is its superior resistance to oxidation, ozone and erosion. Since EPDM belongs to the polyolefin (PA66) family, it has excellent vulcanization properties. Among all rubber materials, EPDM has the lowest specific gravity. It can absorb a large amount of fillers and oils without significantly affecting its properties. Therefore, it can be used to produce low-cost rubber compounds.

Sulfurization type

Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) can be vulcanized using organic peroxides or sulfur. However, compared to sulfur vulcanization, the cross-linked EPDM obtained through peroxide vulcanization has higher temperature resistance, lower compression deformation, and improved vulcanization properties when used in the wire and cable industry. The drawback of peroxide vulcanization is the higher cost.

Secondly, EPDM rubber has excellent air tightness, excellent ozone resistance, aging resistance and heat resistance. It has been widely applied in the automotive rubber field, such as: waterproof sealing pads for car antennas, corrugated tubes for car wiring harnesses, window seals, shock absorber pads, and so on. Of course, for some specific models, due to different formulations, their physical properties may vary.
