What color is natural rubber?

Release time:2026-07-13

Rubber is divided into natural rubber and synthetic rubber. Natural rubber mainly comes from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. When the outer skin of this tree is cut open, a milky white liquid will flow out, which is called latex. The latex is condensed, washed, molded, and dried to obtain natural rubber. Synthetic rubber is produced by artificial synthesis methods. Different raw materials (monomers) can be used to synthesize different types of rubber. In 1900-1910, chemist C.D. Harris measured that the structure of natural rubber is a polymer of isoprene, which opened up a way for the artificial synthesis of rubber. In 1910, Russian chemist SV Lebedev (1874-1934) used metallic sodium as a catalyst to polymerize 1,3-butadiene to form butyl rubber. Later, many new synthetic rubber varieties emerged, such as styrene-butadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber, and styrene-butadiene-styrene rubber, etc. The output of synthetic rubber has greatly exceeded that of natural rubber, and the largest output is styrene-butadiene rubber.

General-purpose rubber refers to the rubber types that partially or entirely replace natural rubber, such as styrene-butadiene rubber, butadiene rubber, isoprene rubber, etc. It is mainly used for manufacturing tires and general industrial rubber products. The demand for general-purpose rubber is large, and it is the main type of synthetic rubber.

Styrene-butadiene rubber is produced by the copolymerization of butadiene and styrene. It is the most widely used general-purpose synthetic rubber and includes emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber, solution styrene-butadiene rubber, and thermoplastic rubber (SBS).

Styrene-butadiene rubber is produced by solution polymerization of butadiene. Styrene-butadiene rubber has particularly excellent cold resistance, wear resistance and elasticity, and also has good aging resistance. Most of the styrene-butadiene rubber is used in the production of tires, while a small portion is used in the manufacture of cold-resistant products, cushioning materials, as well as tapes, shoes, etc. The disadvantage of styrene-butadiene rubber is that its tear resistance is poor and its anti-slip performance is not good.

Isoprene rubber is the abbreviation for polyisoprene rubber. It is produced by solution polymerization method. Like natural rubber, isoprene rubber has good elasticity and wear resistance, excellent heat resistance and good chemical stability. The raw rubber of isoprene rubber (before processing) has significantly lower strength than natural rubber, but its quality uniformity, processing performance, etc. are better than natural rubber. Isoprene rubber can be used to manufacture heavy-duty tires and off-road tires, and can also be used to produce various rubber products.

Ethylene-propylene rubber is synthesized from ethylene and propylene as the main raw materials. It has outstanding resistance to aging, electrical insulation properties and ozone resistance. Ethylene-propylene rubber can be filled with oil and carbon black in large quantities, resulting in lower product prices. It has good chemical stability and similar properties to butyl rubber in terms of wear resistance, elasticity, oil resistance and ozone resistance. Ethylene-propylene rubber has a wide range of applications, such as being used as the sidewalls, strips and inner tubes of tires, as well as components of automobiles. It can also be used as the sheath of wires and cables, and as insulation materials for high and ultra-high voltages. It can also be used to manufacture light-colored products like rubber shoes and hygiene products.

Chloroprene rubber is made from chloroprene as the main raw material, through homopolymerization or a small amount of other monomers for copolymerization. It has high tensile strength, excellent heat resistance, light resistance, aging resistance, and oil resistance, which are all superior to natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, and cis-butadiene rubber. It has strong fire resistance and excellent flame retardancy, and its chemical stability is high, with good water resistance. The disadvantages of chloroprene rubber are poor electrical insulation performance and cold resistance, and the raw rubber is unstable during storage. Chloroprene rubber is widely used, such as for making transportation belts and transmission belts, insulating materials for wires and cables, manufacturing oil-resistant rubber hoses, gaskets, and equipment linings resistant to chemical corrosion.

A sheet-like product made of rubber as the main material (which may contain reinforcing materials such as fabric or metal sheets), obtained through vulcanization and having a certain thickness and a large area. It is simply called a rubber sheet.

It has a relatively high hardness and average physical and mechanical properties. It can operate in an environment with low pressure and a temperature range of 0 to +60 degrees Celsius.

It is made by compounding the rubber, then pressing and laminating it into a shape or through extrusion molding. It is vulcanized using a flat vulcanizing machine or continuously using a drum vulcanizing machine. The colors include black, gray, green, blue, etc.
