Silica gel is a highly active adsorption material, belonging to amorphous substance. Its chemical formula is mSiO2·nH2O. It is insoluble in water and any solvent, non-toxic and odorless, and has stable chemical properties. It does not react with any substance except strong alkali and hydrofluoric acid. Various types of silica gel have different microporous structures due to different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many characteristics that other similar materials cannot replace: high adsorption performance, good thermal stability, stable chemical properties, and high mechanical strength, etc.
Silica gel is classified according to the size of its pore diameter as: large-pore silica gel, coarse-pore silica gel, B-type silica gel, and fine-pore silica gel. Due to the different pore structures, their adsorption properties have their own characteristics. Coarse-pore silica gel has a higher adsorption capacity under high relative humidity conditions, while fine-pore silica gel has a higher adsorption capacity than coarse-pore silica gel under low relative humidity conditions. B-type silica gel, due to its pore structure being between coarse and fine-pore silica gel, has an adsorption capacity between the two. Large-pore silica gel is generally used as a catalyst carrier, a whitening agent, and a toothpaste abrasive, etc. Therefore, different varieties should be selected according to different purposes.
After absorbing moisture, silica gel can be regenerated by methods such as exposure to sunlight, firing, or air drying.
