The respiratory tract of the car engine: rubber intake pipe

Release time:2026-07-16

Let me start with a digression. Have you ever wondered which market has the highest rubber consumption? In fact, the automotive industry accounts for 70% of the rubber market. Among this, the rubber consumption in tires constitutes 60%, and the remaining 40% consists of other rubber products. And among these 40%, the automotive intake pipe is the largest component. Alright, let's get back to the main topic.

We know that a car can move because the fuel combustion converts chemical energy into mechanical energy. Then, the mechanical energy drives the pistons to perform reciprocating motion, and this power is subsequently transmitted to the wheels. After that, the car starts to move. In this process, the internal combustion engine is the key component.

The fuel for internal combustion engines requires oxygen, but the cylinder is sealed and does not allow air to pass through. So what should be done? The solution is to introduce air into the cylinder. The intake pipe is designed to deliver air into the cylinder. However, it's not as simple as just directly sending in the air.

If there is dust or sand in the air, it will cause irreversible damage to the cylinder. Therefore, before the air reaches the cylinder, there is a filter in place to remove impurities. The next step is for the air to reach the cylinder. The section of pipe from the air intake to the filter and then to the cylinder is called the intake main pipe.

The next step is to supply air into the cylinder. However, since there are multiple cylinders in the car, to distribute the air evenly into the cylinders, multiple pipes are needed. This pipe has a specific technical name: intake manifold.

The above is a comparison of the two types of cars.

Now let's talk a bit more about the intake pipe itself. The shape and length of the intake pipe vary depending on the type of car. There are vertical and spiral types. This is mainly due to the car's positioning. For example, sports cars or off-road vehicles typically use the vertical type, while regular family cars use the vertical type. The difference is that the former has higher requirements for engine power, while the latter mainly considers emissions and economic efficiency. Why is this so? Because the spiral intake pipe allows air to generate vortices when entering the pipe, and the generation of vortices is beneficial for improving the mixture of air and fuel. The improvement in mixture leads to an increase in combustion efficiency, which is what we call fuel economy.

At this point, the simple introduction to the car intake pipe is complete. If you have any further questions or need business consultation, please feel free to contact us at any time.
