The relationship between the pump valve and the rubber diaphragm

Where there is a pump, there must be a valve. Where there is a pump and a valve, there must be a diaphragm. So, what kind of connection exists among the pump, the valve, and the diaphragm? Before discussing the connection, it is necessary to first introduce to everyone the basic knowledge of the pump, the valve, and the rubber diaphragm. Just like learning arithmetic, one must first understand the numbers.

There are many types of pumps, including water pumps, oil pumps, and air pumps. According to the driving method and working principle, they can be classified as electric type, power type, centrifugal type, etc. The pumps we often see used for watering and irrigation belong to water pumps, and the total output of water pumps accounts for more than half of all pump types. 

Although there are many types of pumps, their functions are all the same: they are used to convey or increase the pressure of fluids (the fluids can be liquids or gases). Additionally, when it comes to mechanical devices used for conveying fluids, the Chinese waterwheel has a much longer history, having existed as early as the 1st century AD. The amount of flow, the height of lift, and the rotational speed are the main criteria for distinguishing the performance quality of pumps. 

Pumps are used to convey and increase the pressure of fluids. Yes, their function is relatively simple, but many functions are achieved through the conveyance and pressure increase of fluids. For example, the hydraulic system of an excavator, the opening and closing of an aircraft wing, the ascent and descent, and the floating and sinking of a submarine, etc. And isn't this statement also providing us with a deeper understanding of pumps? Moreover, the realization of these functions has a high requirement for the sealing performance of rubber diaphragms. If the sealing performance is poor, it will affect the performance of the product.

Now let's talk about valves. Depending on the type of medium being transported, they can be classified as: drain valves, exhaust valves, oil discharge valves, and sewage discharge valves. According to their functions, they can also be divided into: shut-off valves used for opening and closing, which is the simplest type, but these valves are difficult to open and close when the diameter is large. There are also check valves to prevent backflow of the fluid, as well as pneumatic vacuum valves and vacuum ball valves used in vacuum systems, etc. According to the driving principle, they can be: manual, pneumatic, electromagnetic, electric, turbine, etc. 

Although there are many types, their functions are largely similar. They can be summarized as follows: used for opening and closing, controlling the pressure, flow direction and speed, flow rate and pressure magnitude of the fluid. 

The structures of different types of valves are slightly different, but they all have the same most basic requirement: Sealing is an important indicator of valve performance. There should be no fluid leakage when the valve is closed. This is particularly important for flammable, explosive, and toxic media. Even a small amount of leakage would be unimaginably disastrous. The second point is wear resistance. The valve should not break after being opened and closed several times. This is also the most basic requirement for rubber diaphragm manufacturers. Additionally, during later use, special attention should be paid to these two points. Regular sealing tests and rust prevention treatments should be conducted.

Before discussing the diaphragm, let's first talk about the development trend of the pump valve. Due to the influence of its own materials (mostly metals) and working environment, pump valves inevitably suffer from corrosion and wear, which in turn affect the performance of the product. Eventually, the equipment has to be replaced, causing a waste of funds for the enterprise and also a waste of resources. Under such circumstances, new pump body materials such as ceramics and plastics have become the new trend in industry development. This is also the reason why European and American brands are competitive. Not only is the cost low, but they are also more durable compared to ordinary pump body materials. 

Finally, we come to the topic of diaphragms. We have previously shared an article about rubber diaphragms, and I believe everyone has gained a relatively comprehensive understanding of diaphragms. Diaphragms are not only used in mechanical industries such as pumps and valves, but can also be seen in horns and air purifiers. For pumps and valves, regardless of the type of fluid medium, as long as there is an opening and closing area, there will inevitably be leakage problems to varying degrees. The existence of diaphragms, in addition to functions such as regulating pressure/flow, shock absorption/buffering, etc., the most fundamental and important function is to solve the sealing problem. And different materials are used, such as nylon, cotton canvas, stretchable fabric, polyester fabric, etc., to enable the diaphragm to achieve different performances in different working environments, such as flexibility, high-pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, tear resistance, etc. 

At this point, the pumps, valves and diaphragms have all been introduced. To summarize briefly, pumps are used to transport fluids, valves are used to control the opening and closing of fluids, and diaphragms serve the functions of sealing, regulating pressure and flow.
